Pull Up & FONO launch Active Listening, a new dance party at Ottawa's HiFi listening lounge with DJs & live visuals
.png)
Pull Up Crew, in celebrations of 4 years of Pull Up, we're launching a new event series at FONO.
On August 8, Pull Up & FONO are excited to launch Active Listening, a new full-venue dance party at Ottawa's HiFi listening lounge with DJs & live visuals.
Active Listening , notably "the practice of being fully present in a conversation" for us goes beyond conversations as listening is a key principle of a dance floor. The title also invokes being active, such as dancing, another core element of our events. Utilizing both the ballroom and the lounge at FONO, you'll be transcended into a dance party like no other. Standout DJs & live visuals in the Ballroom and a vinyl set in the lounge are sure to have you active.
On August 8th, we will be joined by a solid line up of prominent Ottawa DJs all bringing their respective sounds.
Pink Veil, will be playing a vinyl set in the FONO lounge and showing us her deep curation and selections for a two-hour set. So Durand & PC will be playing their first back to back set bringing their bag of club weapons to the decks and Ch1oehaze will be closing out the evening keeping you moving with a set full of energy. Additionally, we will be joined by Bluechapellamb who will be performing live visuals to accompany the music in her signature glitchy style. What more could you want?

Join us to experience Juno by Remi Wolf on FONO's immersive HiFi system.
Released in 2021, Juno is the vibrant, kaleidoscopic debut album that catapulted Remi Wolf into modern pop stardom. Written during a period of intense personal transformation, the record established Wolf as one of the most unpredictable, fearless, and joyful creative forces in 21st-century music.
Musically, the album is a hyper-energetic, genre-bending explosion that seamlessly fuses funk, bedroom pop, modern R&B, and neo-soul. Powered by Wolf’s powerhouse, soul-drenched vocals and packed with eccentric, hyper-vivid lyrics, tracks like "Disco Man," "Liquor Store," and "Sexy Villain" showcase an artist operating at absolute full throttle. Join us to experience this modern alt-pop classic front-to-back on FONO's hifi system.

Chef Izzeldin Bukhari and Dr. Yipeng Ge discuss Palestinian culinary traditions and the critical healthcare role of Gaza's communal kitchens.
.png)
Hear chef and educator Izzeldin Bukhari, visiting Canada for the first time from East Jerusalem, and Dr. Yipeng Ge (Doctors Against Genocide) in conversation on Palestinian food traditions (from harvest to preservation), and how Gaza's communal kitchens are providing urgent healthcare in Gaza.
A huge thank you to our friends at Ottawa's FONO HiFi Lounge for opening their doors to us for this event. Come early: Between 5pm and 6pm, join us in the lounge for a chance to connect with fellow attendees and enjoy vegetarian-friendly appetizers, prepared by Chef Izzeldin. Then, at 6pm, we begin the hosted conversation, with general seating.
FONO is a fully accessible venue designed to welcome all guests.
A portion of the profits will support The Sameer Project, a donations-based initiative led by Palestinians in the diaspora, working to supply aid to displaced families in Gaza.
------------------------------------
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Dr. Yipeng Ge is a primary care physician and public health practitioner based on the traditional, unceded, and unsurrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg (also known as Ottawa, Canada). In his clinical practice, he works in family medicine practice and refugee health at a community health centre. He has worked on and studied the structural and colonial determinants of health in both the settler colonial contexts of so-called Canada and occupied Palestine. He volunteered as a medic in Gaza in 2024 during the genocide.
Chef Izzeldin Bukhari is a chef and food researcher dedicated to preserving and reimagining Palestinian culinary heritage. As the founder of "Sacred Cuisine," he runs pop-up kitchens, food tours, and cooking experiences across Palestine, and travels internationally for restaurant residencies, collaborations, and cultural exchanges. Known for his plant-forward approach, he specializes in somi cuisine — traditional vegan and vegetarian dishes connected to fasting traditions and seasonal eating practices. His work combines sustainability, zero-waste cooking, spirituality, and cultural preservation. Bukhari has become an active voice in Palestine’s growing gastronomy scene.

UK-based DJ AKWA is returns to Canada for a two-week run and plays FONO August 20th. No cover—reserve your table now!
.png)
Join us in our HiFi Lounge on Thursday, August 20th for a special guest DJ making a rare appearance back in Ottawa — AKWA.
AKWA is a London-via-Ottawa selector known for genre-fluid sets that move with the room. He's been playing for crowds since he was 15, and landed his first club residency in Ottawa the following year, back in 2018. Nine years deep into record collecting, his sets draw from crates built on instinct as much as genre, always digging for the next track that belongs on the floor.
That range shows in where he plays: festival main stages one year, grungy West Berlin bunkers the next, always reading the room and playing the right record at the right time. Whether it's groovy, moody, or full of funk, he plays wherever the night takes him.
This year has taken AKWA across the Atlantic and back, highlighted by radio sets at HÖR Berlin and The Lot Radio in Greenpoint, NY. He returns to Canada for a two-week run this August.

FONO presents New York City's own Raavi along with local songwriter Mars Aspen

FONO presents...
Raavi (NYC) + Mars Aspen (OTT)
August 22 | FONO | 8pm doors
Formed in 2017 under the moniker Raavi & the Houseplants, Raavi is fronted by queer-desi songwriter Raavi Sita. The band blossomed in the Boston DIY scene before heading to Brooklyn to work on their latest project, It Grows on Trees. The EP was born from the trials of pandemic life; two years of worldly idleness left Sita with only a handful of songs to express and cope with enormous upheaval. Fleshed out with the rest of the band - James Duncan on bass, Jason Block on drums, and producer Justin Termotto - It Grows on Trees was the turn of a new leaf for Raavi. With Ruben Radlauer (Model/Actriz & Dirt Buyer) co-engineering and mixing the record, the band found their stride and ran with it.
Courageous enough to be vulnerable, Mars Aspen (they/them) gets real with their lush folk confessionals. This Ottawa-based songwriter digs into the hardest parts of intimate connections, spilling their heart so that you—in turn—can better understand your own.

Jazz Nite in the HiFi Lounge | Woods & Gummeson
Aug 26 | 7PM–10PM
Modern jazz.
Warm melodies.
Saxophone and keys.
Two musicians, one ongoing conversation. After dozens of performances together, Peter Woods (alto/tenor sax) & Nick Gummeson (piano/organ keyboard) have developed an easy musical shorthand that leaves room for curiosity, risk, and surprise. Drawing from classic jazz and open improvisation, each set unfolds naturally, shaped by the room, the audience, and the moment. Their music rewards attentive listening without ever feeling precious—focused, fluid, and always alive to what happens next.

Canadian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Marc McLaughlin crafts emotionally direct, genre-blending folk-pop songs.
.png)
Marc McLaughlin is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Canada’s East Coast, writing hushed, emotionally direct songs that fall somewhere between lo-fi folk and left-field pop. Carried by a soft voice at unhurried tempos, McLaughlin’s work blurs the line between acoustic confession and electronic experimentation.
Since the 2025 release of his EP All I Can Say, he has toured across Canada, the UK, and Europe and shared stages with artists such as Dan Mangan, Kelly McMichael, and By Divine Right. His live performances balance a dry wit with tender explorations of the human condition.
